Our Assessment: The Norinco NHM 91 is a semi-automatic rifle based on the Kalashnikov design, originating from China’s Norinco (China North Industries Corp). Introduced in the early 1990s, the NHM 91 was designed to meet the requirements of the U.S. civilian market after the 1989 import ban on “assault-style” firearms. As such, it skirts around regulations by omitting features like a bayonet lug and pistol grip. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, the NHM 91 is a long-barreled variant, featuring a 21-inch heavier barrel, offering a bit more in terms of accuracy compared to its shorter-barreled relatives.
One distinctive feature of the NHM 91 is its RPK-style heavy barrel and bipod, adding to its heft and shooting stability. These features, along with its elongated barrel, make it well-suited for more precise shooting tasks compared to typical AK variants. The receiver is stamped, following the tradition of most AK-style firearms, but it’s worth noting that the metal used is generally thicker than that of many other AKs, enhancing durability with a 1.5mm RPK receiver compared to the Type 56’s 1.0mm thick receiver.
In summary, the Norinco NHM 91 offers a unique blend of features that separate it from both traditional AK-47 models and other civilian market adaptations. Its longer, heavy barrel and bipod make it more oriented towards precision shooting, while its robust construction ensures long-lasting performance. Whether you’re an AK enthusiast or a collector interested in the evolution of this iconic design to meet market and regulatory demands, the NHM 91 makes for a fascinating and functional addition to any collection. -L.S.
