Our Assessment: The Norinco NDM-86 is a Chinese-manufactured sniper rifle, a variant of the famous Soviet-designed Dragunov SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova). Introduced to the market by Norinco (China North Industries Corporation), a major Chinese defense corporation, the NDM-86 was designed to meet both military and civilian demand for a precision long-range rifle. What makes the NDM-86 particularly interesting is its availability in two calibers: the original Soviet 7.62x54mmR, and the more universally available .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO). This choice of calibers broadened its appeal, allowing users to select a model that best suits their availability of ammunition or personal preference. This one is chambered in 7.62×51 which thankfully opens the ammo options up for the user.
The NDM-86 maintains the iconic design and functionality of the Dragunov SVD, including its semi-automatic action, which allows for rapid follow-up shots compared to bolt-action sniper rifles. It features a gas-operated system with a short-stroke gas piston, a design that contributes to its reliability under various conditions. The rifle is equipped with a PSO-1 type telescopic sight, which is integral to its design and enhances its effectiveness as a sniper rifle by providing a range-finding reticle and variable magnification.
Externally, the NDM-86 resembles the Dragunov SVD closely, retaining the distinctive silhouette, including the long barrel, wooden stock, and handguard. The rifle has seen use in various capacities around the world, including by military and law enforcement agencies, and has also found a market among civilian shooters and collectors who value its historical significance and performance.
The introduction of the NDM-86 into markets outside China was met with enthusiasm by collectors and shooters alike, especially in the United States, where the rifle’s rarity and association with the iconic Dragunov design made it a coveted item. Due to import restrictions and regulations, along with the very few that were ever imported, the NDM-86 has become a rare and sought-after rifle in the U.S., enhancing its mystique and desirability among firearms enthusiasts.
