Our Assessment: The Romanian PSL, often referred to as the FPK or Dragunov style rifle, is a designated marksman rifle developed to provide extended range capability within a Kalashnikov based platform. Produced at the Cugir factory and later assembled for the U.S. market on receivers such as those from Nodak Spud, the PSL retains the long stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt of the AK design while incorporating a longer barrel and reinforced components to handle the full power 7.62x54R cartridge. Introduced during the Cold War, the PSL became a widely recognized marksman rifle across Eastern Bloc forces. The 7.62x54R cartridge, adopted by Russia in 1891, remains one of the longest serving military cartridges in continuous use.
This example is built on a Nodak Spud receiver and retains about 98 percent of its original finish with only light operational wear visible on the edges of the scope rail, bolt carrier, and safety lever. The wood furniture set with vented handguards and rubber buttpad shows minimal handling wear with faint scratches and compression marks but remains in Excellent condition overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The rifle includes a 10 round waffle magazine and a bipod mounted to the receiver. The trigger retaining pin is noted to be loose. The action functions correctly and the rifle presents as a clean example of a Romanian PSL pattern designated marksman rifle.
