Our Assessment: The Ithaca NID (New Ithaca Double) 20 gauge shotgun represents a pinnacle of American shotgun craftsmanship from the early 20th century. Introduced in 1925, the NID series was Ithaca’s final and most refined iteration of the double-barrel shotgun, succeeding the earlier Flues model. The “NID” designation stands for “New Ithaca Double,” marking a significant improvement in design and durability over its predecessors. This was particularly evident in its enhanced lock mechanism and stronger frame, which was built to handle the increased pressures of modern smokeless powder cartridges.
Its barrels are known for their exceptional craftsmanship, offering tight, consistent patterns that are ideal for hunting game birds. The NID’s receiver was often available in various grades, ranging from the utilitarian to highly engraved models, showcasing the artistry of Ithaca’s gunsmiths. Despite ceasing production in the late 1940s, the Ithaca NID shotgun remains a sought-after piece for those who appreciate the history, craftsmanship, and shooting performance of classic American double-barrel shotguns.
