Sights / Optics: The front sight is a small bead mounted between the barrels near the muzzle. There is no rear sight, typical of English traveling and defensive pistols of the period.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece finely checkered walnut grip with engraved steel buttcap, engraved trigger guard, escutcheon, captive ramrod, and decorative metal furniture. The stock shows scattered handling marks, dents, scratches, and finish wear consistent with age and use. There are several compression marks and minor impressions around the lock panels and grip. There are minor losses on the forend. The checkering remains visible and attractive. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good condition for its age.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The smooth bores dim. There is light corrosion but no significant pitting. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6/10. 

Overall Condition: This pistol retains a pleasing antique appearance with much of the original finish having aged to a smooth gray patina with silver tones on the lock plates where the case color has turned. The twist steel barrels remain attractive with most of the pattern still visible. The lock plates, hammers, trigger guard, buttcap, and furniture retain clear engraving with moderate wear from handling and age. The markings remain legible, including the “MORTIMER” lockplate markings and “MORTIMER LONDON” barrel rib marking. Overall, this pistol rates in Very Good Antique condition.

Mechanics: The action functions. We have not fired this pistol. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough inspection by a qualified gunsmith is recommended before use.

Accessories: Captive steel ramrod.

Assessment: Mortimer was among the better-known London gunmaking firms of the late 18th and 19th centuries, producing fine sporting arms, military arms, and high-quality traveling pistols for the British market. Double-barrel percussion pistols such as this example represented the pinnacle of personal defensive arms prior to the widespread adoption of metallic-cartridge revolvers. The use of twist steel barrels, refined engraving, quality walnut stocks, and double-barrel construction reflected both craftsmanship and expense.

This example remains an attractive English double-barrel percussion pistol with engraved lockwork, twist steel barrels, checkered walnut grip, captive ramrod, and desirable Mortimer London markings. The pistol exhibits honest age and use while retaining strong visual appeal and period character. Antique English percussion pistols from established London makers remain highly sought after by collectors of British arms, black powder enthusiasts, and students of 19th-century firearms development.
