Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is moderate erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 8/10.
Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the US used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The US military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are small handling marks throughout. There is light scattered speckles of rust in some places. The screw heads are sharp, the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent Condition as refinished by Mitchell’s Mausers.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with the serial number matching Mitchell’s Mausers box.
Our Assessment: Mitchell’s Mausers K98Ks are meticulously refurbished and restored versions of the original, iconic German Karabiner 98k (K98k) rifle. The K98k was the standard service rifle of the German military during World War II, and is still renowned for its durability, accuracy, and historical significance. Mitchell’s Mausers specializes in restoring and refurbishing the K98k. Their process involves carefully disassembling the rifle, cleaning and inspecting all components, and then reassembling the rifle to ensure it meets modern safety and performance standards. This restoration process often includes re-bluing metal parts and refinishing the wood stock, resulting in a rifle that looks and functions like new while retaining its historical authenticity. This rifle, with its “bcd /42” marking, was originally manufactured in 1942 by Gustloff-Werke, whose factory was located in Weimar, Germany. It has since been beautifully restored by Mitchell’s Mausers. It features mostly matching serial numbered parts, and with its light colored stock and gleaming metal parts, remains a visually striking K98k. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid. -R.E.
