Our Assessment: The Reichsrevolver M1879 was Germany’s first official service revolver, designed to standardize the sidearms of the various German states under a single model. Manufactured by several firms, including Mauser, these robust single-action revolvers were chambered in 10.6x25mmR, a cartridge comparable to the .44 Russian. The M1879 was intended to be reliable and sturdy, featuring a solid frame, fixed sights, and a loading gate system reminiscent of earlier European military revolvers. Despite its size and weight, it was well-received for its durability and simplicity.

By 1883, the Reichsrevolver M1883 was introduced as a slightly more compact alternative, but the M1879 continued in service well into the early 20th century, with some examples reportedly used during World War I. These revolvers lacked an ejector rod, requiring manual extraction of spent casings—a testament to their design as military sidearms for soldiers who often had time to reload between engagements.

For collectors of antique German military firearms, this Mauser-manufactured Reichsrevolver is a significant piece of history. Its presence in conflicts from the late 19th century into the Great War makes it an appealing addition to any military arms collection.
