Our Assessment: The Mauser Model 66 is a distinctive post-war sporting rifle that departs from traditional Mauser 98 designs by incorporating a telescoping bolt system, allowing for a shorter receiver while maintaining a full length cartridge capability. Introduced in the 1960s by Mauser-Werke in Oberndorf, the Model 66 was engineered for precision and smooth operation, often fitted with double set triggers for enhanced accuracy. Chambered in 9.3x64mm, a powerful German cartridge introduced in the early 20th century and favored for large game hunting, the rifle reflects a European sporting tradition emphasizing both performance and refined engineering. This 1970 example retains approximately 98 percent of its original blued finish, with light handling marks and faint spots of surface oxidation visible. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9 out of 10, showing only minor fouling. The walnut stock shows notable wear, including scratches, pressure dents, and small chips, with a larger loss of material at the right side near the receiver, though the checkering remains mostly pronounced, rating in Fair condition. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers and claw mounts for optics, and retains its original iron sights. Markings are clear and well defined, with lightly used screw heads and proper mechanical function.
The Model 66’s telescoping bolt system provides a smooth and compact action, distinguishing it from conventional bolt action rifles and contributing to its reputation for precision. The 9.3x64mm chambering offers substantial power, making it well suited for larger game, while the double set triggers allow for refined trigger control. This example stands as a representative piece of Mauser’s post-war sporting rifle innovation, combining unique mechanical design, strong metal condition, and a powerful chambering in a classic European hunting rifle format. -R.E.
