Our Assessment: The Swedish Carl Gustaf M94-14 Carbine in 6.5x55mm is a distinguished and historically significant firearm, reflecting Sweden’s commitment to modernizing its military in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The M94 carbine, initially adopted in 1894, was part of a broader effort to equip the Swedish armed forces with reliable, modern rifles chambered in the newly adopted 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser cartridge. The 6.5x55mm cartridge, known for its excellent ballistic performance and moderate recoil, was well-suited to both long-range accuracy and manageable handling. This cartridge, combined with the robust design of the M94, made the carbine an effective and versatile weapon for various military applications. The M94 carbine was designed specifically for cavalry and other troops who required a shorter, more maneuverable firearm than the standard long rifles of the time. The shorter barrel and overall length made the carbine easier to handle on horseback and in confined spaces, while still maintaining the accuracy and stopping power of the 6.5x55mm cartridge. The original M94 carbine featured a straight bolt handle and lacked a bayonet lug, differentiating it from the longer M96 rifle. However, by 1914, it became clear that some modifications were necessary to improve the carbine’s utility. The updated M94-14 model included a few key changes, most notably the addition of a bayonet lug, allowing soldiers to attach a bayonet for close combat. This modification made the carbine more versatile and effective in various combat situations. Manufactured by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori, the M94-14 carbine exhibited the high standards of Swedish craftsmanship. The factory, located in Eskilstuna, Sweden, was renowned for producing high-quality firearms, and the M94-14 was no exception. The carbine featured a sturdy wooden stock and precisely machined metal components, ensuring durability and reliability in the field.
The M94-14 carbine saw extensive use in the Swedish military throughout the early 20th century. Its compact size and reliable performance made it a favored weapon for cavalry units, as well as for artillery and engineering troops who required a more portable firearm. The carbine’s role in the Swedish armed forces continued through both World Wars, although Sweden remained neutral during these conflicts. This particular rifle is in fantastic condition with only minor wear and tear. The barrel is bright and clean, the wood has been nicely refinished as well as the bluing, and a square range plate has been added to the stock to denote the rifle’s condition. Overall, this rifle would make an excellent collectors piece. Please see the photos for more information, and good luck on your bid! -R.E.
