Our Assessment: The Argentine Navy FN-49 in 7.62x51mm NATO is a historically significant and highly desirable variant of Fabrique Nationale’s (FN) legendary FN-49 semi-automatic rifle. Originally produced in 7.65x53mm Argentine, these rifles were later arsenal-converted to 7.62x51mm for continued service with the Argentine Navy. Retaining its original matching serial numbers, this rifle represents both FN’s exceptional craftsmanship and Argentina’s military modernization efforts during the mid-20th century. The conversion to 7.62x51mm NATO reflects Argentina’s transition to a standardized cartridge in line with modern military forces, ensuring compatibility with its expanding arsenal of NATO-caliber firearms. The FN-49’s gas-operated action is known for its smooth and reliable cycling, offering excellent accuracy and durability under harsh conditions. With its detachable box magazines, the rifle provides a balance between firepower and classic semi-automatic operation, making it a formidable firearm for both military applications and historical collections.
For collectors and enthusiasts, a matching Argentine Navy FN-49 is a highly sought-after piece due to its unique service history, limited production numbers, and meticulous FN craftsmanship. The Argentine Navy’s use of these rifles, combined with their conversion to 7.62x51mm, makes them an intriguing bridge between early post-World War II military rifles and later battle rifle designs. Whether valued for its historical significance, robust design, or its role in Argentina’s military evolution, this FN-49 remains a standout example of one of FN’s finest military rifles, blending old-world craftsmanship with modernized firepower.
