Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “- – – The Marlin Firearms Co. – EST.1870- – – / – – – NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A. – MODEL 336 S.C. – CAL 35 REM. – – -“. The right side of the barrel is marked with a “JM” stamp. The bottom tang is marked with the serial number.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramped base, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch sight on a riser, dovetailed to the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece smooth walnut stock set, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, checkered plastic Marlin buttplate, a smooth forend, and the Marlin “Bullseye” present in the belly. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks show light wear, with a few light scratches and dings scattered throughout. The stock’s finish has darkened with age, but it the finish is still intact. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light to moderate wear, with thinning of the finish throughout the receiver, lever/trigger guard, light thinning at the muzzle and on the loading gate, and light scratches and dings scattered throughout the metal surfaces. There is light corrosion and minor pitting on the receiver. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the half-cock safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Introduced shortly after World War II, the Marlin Model 336 refined the company’s traditional lever-action design with a solid-top receiver, side ejection, and a strong, easily serviced action. The S.C., or Sporting Carbine, configuration paired a handy 20-inch barrel with a pistol-grip walnut stock, making it particularly well suited to thick woods hunting. Chambered in .35 Remington, it offers the authoritative short-range performance long favored for deer, black bear, and similar North American game.
Manufactured in 1950, this early “G” prefix example retains its original blue finish and walnut stocks, including the Marlin “Bullseye” and checkered factory buttplate. The metal shows honest field wear, finish thinning, and some light corrosion with minor receiver pitting, while the wood remains tight and free of chips or cracks. Most importantly, the bore is excellent, remaining bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. With its correct open sights, sound mechanics, desirable .35 Remington chambering, and classic early-production configuration, this C&R-eligible Model 336 S.C. is an appealing vintage hunting rifle with considerable traditional Marlin character. – J.D.
