Markings: The left shoulder of the barrel “The Marlin Firearms Co. – EST. 1870 / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. – MODEL 336 R.C. – CAL.35 REM.”. The right side of the barrel at the receiver is marked with a circled “JM” proof. The lower tang is marked “L6786”.

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to the top of the barrel. The rear sight is a Marbles U-notch buckhorn elevator sight that is dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut a banded forearm, semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, a Western Field rubber ventilated buttpad, and a Marlin “Bullseye” in the belly.  The LOP measures 14 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate.  There is some faint mold staining scattered on the left side of the buttstock.  There are a few small nicks and compressions.  There are no chips or cracks.  The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition for C&R.

Bore Condition:  The bore is gray with sharp rifling.  There is no visible erosion.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its metal finish. There is thinning at all leading edges. There is faint surface oxidation on the barrel and mag tube, as well as some more prominently on the lever.  There is minor rust freckling on the receiver and lever with some erosion around the edges of the lever.  The action and hammer has standard operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition for C&R.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. The lever safety is present. The lever locks up tightly and the hammer has a half-cock safety position. We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment:Marlin’s Model 1893 rifle was a direct competitor to the Winchester Model 1894 rifle from 1893 to 1936, when with minor changes to the stock, forearm, and sights, it was re-designated the Model 1936, which changed to M36 shortly thereafter. Compared to the Winchester M1894, it offered side-ejection of fired cartridges, a round breech bolt and a full pistol grip buttstock. In 1948, the Model 36 was replaced with the Model 336, which incorporated the patents of Thomas R. Robinson, a Marlin employee. The Model 336 has been in continuous production until the present day. This rifle is a 1951 vintage Marlin Model 336RC carbine chambered in .35 Rem. It was made when outstanding quality was the norm in U.S. produced firearms. This rifle will make a great deer rifle and is just right for a saddle gun or for carrying in the back window of your pickup truck. Please see our photos and good luck! – L.S.
