Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s two-line warning. The left side of the barrel is marked “1894 COWBOY COMPETITION” followed by “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / ***MODEL 1894CBC – CAL. 45 COLT**” and is also marked with the “JM” proof. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The top of the receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY”.
Barrel Length: 20”, Octagonal
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated brass beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a “U” notched semi-buckhorn elevator sight dovetailed into the barrel. The notch can be reversed to present a “V” notch and has a white diamond aiming reference that has been removed.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth American walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, checkered black hard rubber Marlin buttplate, and Marlin “bullseye” in the belly. There are a few very light compressions and a few draglines and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures approximately 13 3/8? from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear on the heel and toe. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition. There is some wear around the tangs.

Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the Ballard rifling is sharp and deep. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The finish is very strong throughout. The barrel and tube very few light little scuffs and draglines. There is some loading wear on the loading gate. There are a few other scattered light marks and very minor operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine Plus-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and is butter smooth. This rifle was serviced by Pioneer Gun works with an action job and one piece firing pin. The action glides like butter and the trigger pull is light and crisp. There is a receiver-mounted cross-bolt safety. The lever safety is present and functions properly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: For more than a century, Marlin’s 1894 has served as a popular pistol-caliber lever-action rifle. The design is still in production today and finds favor with both hunters and Cowboy Action Shooting competitors. This example is a Model 1894CBC Cowboy Competition made with a 20” octagonal barrel and chambered for .45 LC. The rifle is in about Fine Plus-Excellent condition with most of its metal finish remaining and light wear in the stocks. This rifle comes enhanced by Pioneer Gun Works Inc and is finely tuned. Upon picking it up and feeling how silky smooth and slick it is, this is bound to be a new favorite rifle for the range or competition. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. With its smooth lever action, used with the classic .45 Colt it is perfect for Cowboy Action Shooting or informal target practice.
