Our Assessment: The CETME rifle was originally developed in Spain during the early 1950s by the Centro de Estudios Técnicos de Materiales Especiales (CETME). Designed by German engineer Ludwig Vorgrimler, who had previously worked on the STG-45(M), the CETME series influenced numerous future rifle designs, most notably Germany’s renowned G3 battle rifle. Initially chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, CETME rifles became the standard issue for the Spanish military and saw widespread adoption due to their robust, reliable roller-delayed blowback mechanism, simplicity, and accuracy.
The MalColMar CETME L is a modern civilian reproduction of Spain’s later-generation CETME L rifle, chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO. Originally introduced to the Spanish military in the late 1980s, the CETME L updated the classic CETME design to a lighter, more ergonomic platform suitable for NATO-standard ammunition. MalColMar’s CETME L pays meticulous attention to authenticity, combining original Spanish surplus parts with newly manufactured components and modern manufacturing techniques. This recreation appeals strongly to collectors, history enthusiasts, and practical shooters alike, offering an authentic experience of Cold War-era military firearms technology adapted to contemporary standards and performance expectations.
