Our Assessment: The Daewoo DR-200 is a civilian import variant of the South Korean K2 service rifle, adapted for the U.S. market during the 1990s with features compliant to import restrictions of the era. Despite its modified configuration, the DR-200 retains the core mechanical design of the K2, utilizing a long stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, combining the reliability associated with piston driven rifles and the familiar controls of Western platforms. Chambered in .223 Remington, a cartridge introduced in the 1960s and closely related to the 5.56 NATO, the rifle offers flat trajectory, moderate recoil, and widespread availability, making it a practical and well balanced intermediate cartridge. This example retains approximately 96 percent of its original parkerized finish, with light handling marks, scattered nicks, and scratches throughout, along with more pronounced rust freckling on the barrel. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9 out of 10, showing light fouling. The polymer furniture, including the ribbed forend and thumbhole stock with rubber buttpad, remains in Very Good Plus condition with only light wear and no structural damage. The rifle is equipped with a raised picatinny rail and a Sniper 4-12x optic in Very Good condition, enhancing its usability beyond the factory iron sights. Markings are clear, and the screw heads and pins remain in good condition, with the rifle maintaining proper mechanical function.
The DR-200 occupies a unique place among imported semi automatic rifles, offering a distinctive blend of AK and AR design characteristics in a configuration tailored to U.S. regulations of its time. Its piston driven system contributes to reliable operation, while its ergonomic layout supports practical handling. This example reflects honest use with visible wear, particularly on the barrel, while retaining strong mechanical integrity and a solid bore. It stands as a representative example of Daewoo’s hybrid rifle design and its role in the evolution of modern semi automatic sporting rifles. -R.E.
