Our Assessment: The Colt “The Coltsman” .223 bolt-action rifle, produced from 1958 to 1966, represents a unique chapter in Colt’s storied firearms history. This venture into the bolt-action rifle market was facilitated by Kodiak Arms, which manufactured the rifles using the highly esteemed Sako L461 actions, renowned for their precision and reliability. The integration of Sako’s advanced action into “The Coltsman” rifles was a deliberate choice by Colt to ensure top-tier performance and establish a strong foothold in the hunting and sport shooting arenas.
Chambered in .223, a caliber known for its accuracy and relatively flat trajectory, “The Coltsman” was particularly well-suited for varmint and small game hunting. The rifles featured high-quality walnut stocks, which not only provided a classic, durable framework but also enhanced the overall aesthetic appeal. The smooth operation of the Sako L461 action in these rifles guaranteed a reliable and satisfying shooting experience, making them highly regarded among enthusiasts for both their functionality and craftsmanship.
Despite these attributes and the strong partnership behind its production, “The Coltsman” did not achieve lasting commercial success and was discontinued after just eight years. However, the unique collaboration between Colt, Kodiak Arms, and Sako has made “The Coltsman” a collectible item today, cherished by gun enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate its historical significance and the quality it brought to Colt’s diverse firearms lineup. This rifle has been beautifully preserved over the years and will make an excellent collectors piece or addition to an arsenal. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
