Our Assessment: The modern Marlin Model 1895 was introduced in 1972 as a large-bore lever-action rifle built on the proven Model 336-pattern action and chambered in .45-70 Government. By the 1990s, the standard Model 1895 combined a 22″ round barrel, pistol-grip walnut stock, four-round tubular magazine, cross-bolt safety, and receiver drilled and tapped for optics. This 1996 example falls within the Micro-Groove era; Marlin did not change the .45-70 Model 1895 to six-groove Ballard-style rifling until 1997. Serial number 04087173 is also consistent with 1996 manufacture under Marlin’s post-1973 serial system, in which the first two digits are subtracted from 100.

This rifle retains about 95% of its original blue finish with light scratches and normal handling and operational wear. The checkered walnut furniture remains in Good to Very Good condition with scattered scratches, compression dents, and several blemishes on the left side of the buttstock but no chips or cracks. The bright Micro-Groove bore retains sharp rifling with no observed erosion and only stubborn copper fouling and rates 9/10. The action functions correctly. With its 22″ barrel, classic pistol-grip sporting configuration, strong bore, and pre-Remington Marlin manufacture, this is an attractive example of the modern Model 1895 in the traditional .45-70 Government chambering.
