Our Assessment: The Soviet SKS was developed at the end of World War II and became the Soviet Union’s transitional infantry carbine between the Mosin-Nagant and the AK-pattern rifle. Chambered in 7.62x39mm and using a short-stroke gas system with a fixed 10-round magazine, the SKS combined traditional rifle handling with semi-automatic fire and an integral folding bayonet. This example was manufactured at Izhevsk Arsenal in 1954, the final year of Izhevsk SKS production and one of only two years in which that arsenal produced the design. The receiver, receiver cover, stock, fixed magazine, bolt carrier, and bolt are all numbered TI409, giving this arsenal-refurbished rifle desirable matching-number continuity.
This rifle retains approximately 98% of its Soviet arsenal-refurbished black finish with light operational wear, scattered minor scratches and nicks, and some finish loss at the muzzle. The wood stock remains in Fine condition with scratches, compression marks, and a few small areas of finish loss but no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no visible erosion, and light fouling in the grooves, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, though we did not fire this rifle. The rifle retains its folding blade bayonet, cleaning rod, and cleaning kit. Please see our photos for a better understanding of the condition and good luck with your bids! -N.P
