Our Assessment: The Soviet Model 1891/30 Mosin Nagant sniper rifle was one of the most recognizable precision rifles fielded during the Second World War. Selected rifles were fitted with optics and modified bolt handles to accommodate scope mounts, creating the PU sniper configuration that became widely used by Soviet marksmen on the Eastern Front. Manufactured primarily at the Izhevsk Arsenal, these rifles were chambered in 7.62x54R, the rimmed cartridge adopted by Russia in 1891 that remains one of the longest serving military cartridges in the world. Wartime sniper rifles were often carefully selected for accuracy before being equipped with scopes and issued to trained marksmen.

This example was produced at the Izhevsk Arsenal in 1943 and is configured as a PU style sniper rifle with a period correct PU optic dated 1942 and marked “N77800.” The rifle retains about 94 percent of its metal finish with scattered scratches, light oxidation, and areas where the blue has developed a light patina. The two piece hardwood stock shows handling marks and finish wear but remains structurally sound with no cracks or chips. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling present, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The PU scope remains clear with some finish loss to the painted exterior. The rifle includes a canvas sling and bayonet and presents as a wartime Izhevsk produced M91/30 configured in sniper form. Please see our high definition photos and good luck on your bids! -N.P
