Our Assessment: The Soviet M91/30 Mosin Nagant sniper rifle was a cornerstone of Red Army precision fire during the Second World War, with selected rifles fitted with PU optics for use by trained marksmen. Produced at arsenals such as Izhevsk in 1943, these rifles were chosen for accuracy and paired with side mounted scopes to extend effective engagement distances. Chambered in 7.62x54R, the cartridge adopted in 1891, the platform delivered consistent performance and remained in service for decades. Rifles showing sniper proofs and later refurbishment marks reflect both wartime selection and postwar arsenal maintenance.
This example was produced at the Izhevsk Arsenal in 1943 and retains matching serialized components throughout, including the scope mount and bolt assembly. The rifle retains about 98 percent of its arsenal refurbished finish with light handling wear, scattered scratches, and minor thinning along with traces of cosmoline and varnish in protected areas. The two piece hardwood stock shows handling wear with compression marks and finish loss but remains free of cracks or chips, rating in Fine condition overall. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling and light fouling present, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The PU scope provides a clear sight picture and is mounted correctly on the side rail. The action functions correctly and the rifle includes its scope, Tulsky box, and paperwork, presenting as a well preserved example of a refurbished Soviet sniper configuration M91/30.
