Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is little to no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9.5/10.

Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. There is wear, scratches, light thinning, and light patina throughout. The action has moderate wear. The barrel band retainer is not correct for this rifle. The screw heads show light use. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Leather sling.

Our Assessment: The Israeli IDF Mauser K98 is a historically significant bolt-action rifle that represents Israel’s early efforts to arm itself during the mid-20th century. Originally manufactured in Belgium and chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser, these rifles were later arsenal-converted to 7.62x51mm NATO to align with Israel’s transition to standardized ammunition. Featuring a 23.5-inch barrel and the unmistakable Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) crest, this rifle is a rare and highly desirable collector’s piece with direct ties to Israel’s fight for survival and military expansion. The conversion to 7.62x51mm NATO made these rifles compatible with Israel’s growing arsenal of modern firearms, including the FN FAL and other NATO-caliber weapons. The Mauser 98 action remained unchanged, retaining its legendary strength and reliability. The rifle’s robust design and accurate bolt-action system made it a capable firearm in combat, serving the IDF during its early conflicts, including the Suez Crisis and the Six-Day War. The presence of the IDF crest adds to the rifle’s authenticity and appeal, making it a direct connection to Israel’s military history.

For collectors, the Israeli IDF Mauser K98 is a unique and historically rich firearm that blends European Mauser craftsmanship with Israeli military ingenuity. The rifle’s Belgian origin, conversion to 7.62 NATO, and its service with the IDF make it an exceptional representation of how Israel adapted surplus arms to build its early defense forces. Whether valued for its historical context, collectible markings, or the renowned Mauser action, this rifle stands as a testament to Israel’s resourcefulness and the enduring legacy of the Mauser design. -R.E.
