Our Assessment: The Hungarian SA-85M, also known as the AMD-65, is a military rifle derived from the AK-47 design. Manufactured in Hungary, it was initially developed for the Hungarian Armed Forces and later exported to other countries. The SA-85M is chambered in 7.62x39mm, the same caliber as the original AK-47, known for its reliability and firepower. It features a stamped steel receiver, a short 16-inch barrel and thumbhole furniture furniture similar to the MAK90 due to its post 1989 ban importation.
While the SA-85M shares many similarities with the AK-47, it has some distinctive Hungarian design elements, and its production quality is well-regarded. The SA-85M has gained popularity among firearm enthusiasts for its unique combination of AK-47 reliability and Hungarian engineering, and it has been used by military and civilian shooters alike for various applications, including target shooting and collecting.
