Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose cap, two sling loops, stacking loop, and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The wood on this shows scattered marks, lines, and compressions. Notably there is a 7” scratch on the belly, an 8” scratch on the right side of the comb, and a chip out of the left side pommel. The handguards similarly show lines, compressions and a few small chips. The rear handguard has a notable gouge in the left hand side. The metal buttplate has lost its finish, has dulled checkering and has surface rust in the checkering. The storage compartment has one of the yellow plastic oiler/cleaning kit containers in it. There are no visible cracks. Overall the furniture is in Good + condition for C&R.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright. The rifling is well defined. There is very minor erosion visible in the grooves. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of 2 and a throat erosion of 2.25-2.5. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its finish. The gas tube, lug, stacking ring, friction surface of the bolt, and edges of the trigger guard show the majority of the finish loss. There is also minor finish loss of the friction surfaces of the receiver. Most of the surfaces have turned brown / green with patina from age. The metal surfaces show some minor wear with a few scattered light lines but no notable damage. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in about Good + condition for C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a certificate of authenticity from the CMP, manual, yellow chamber flag, and CMP card.
Our Assessment: Harrington & Richardson Arms Company (H&R) played a significant role in the production of M1 Garand rifles after World War II and Korea. As one of the contracted manufacturers for the U.S. military, H&R contributed to the massive effort to Re-supply American troops with this iconic firearm during the period after World War Two and the Korean war. H&R produced M1 Garands from 1953 to 1956, while they didn’t have the wartime production history of other manufacturers like Springfield Armory or Winchester, H&R rifles still became notable for their quality and reliability. Despite the cessation of hostilities, H&R continued to manufacture M1 Garands for both civilian and military use. These rifles, chambered in .30-06 Springfield, featured the same semi-automatic action and eight-round en-bloc clip as other variants of the M1 Garand. While H&R’s production numbers may have been lower compared to other manufacturers, their rifles garnered appreciation from collectors and shooters alike for their craftsmanship and performance. The H&R M1 Garands represent a distinctive chapter in the history of this legendary rifle. Their production contributed to the post-war period of rebuilding and military readiness, and their legacy endures as a testament to H&R’s contribution to American firearms manufacturing during a pivotal era.
