Our Assessment: The Remington Model 700 is a proven bolt-action platform, and this 1989 example has been upgraded by Hill Country Customs into a capable .35 Whelen sporting rifle. The .35 Whelen chambering gives the rifle strong medium-to-large game utility, offering more frontal diameter and authority than standard .30-caliber hunting cartridges while still fitting a standard-length action. This rifle features a 22” barrel, internal box magazine, matte black custom finish, and a receiver drilled and tapped for optics. The original iron sights have been removed and the screw holes plugged, and the rifle is currently fitted with a Leupold 4.5-14×40 VX-3HD scope, though the optic itself is not guaranteed.
This rifle remains in Excellent overall condition, retaining about 98% of its current custom finish. The metal shows only light handling and operational wear, with sharp screw heads and clear markings. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light fouling; in this writer’s opinion, it rates 9.5/10. Mechanically, the rifle is functional, with a smooth bolt, operating safety, and clean-breaking trigger, though it has not been test fired. Its overall presentation suggests a well-kept custom hunting rifle with minimal use since the build.
The one-piece fiberglass stock is pillar bedded and finished in a textured black web pattern, giving the rifle a durable, weather-resistant field configuration. It features a semi-pistol grip, straight comb, rubber Decelerator recoil pad, and 13” length of pull, and remains in Excellent condition with only light handling wear and no chips or cracks. Overall, this is a clean and purposeful Hill Country Custom Remington 700 in .35 Whelen, combining a strong bore, excellent finish condition, quality stock work, and useful glass, making it a particularly attractive rifle for the hunter seeking a reliable custom bolt gun in a hard-hitting classic chambering.
