Our Assessment: This M1 Garand was manufactured by Harrington & Richardson in 1955 and retains a correct HRA barrel dated April 1955. Harrington & Richardson was one of the companies contracted by the U.S. government during the early Cold War to continue Garand production after World War II, producing rifles from 1953 to 1956. These late-production rifles are well known for their excellent machining, consistent quality, and strong shooting characteristics.

The rifle includes a cleaning kit stored in the butt of the stock, a classic feature of the Garand that allowed soldiers to carry essential maintenance tools with the rifle in the field. Also included is a U.S. bayonet marked “AFH,” produced by American Fork and Hoe, a well-known wartime manufacturer of U.S. M1 bayonets. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1936, the M1 Garand became America’s primary infantry rifle through World War II and the Korean War, earning a legendary reputation for reliability and firepower. This 1955 H&R example represents one of the final chapters of U.S. Garand production, combining Cold War history with the enduring legacy of America’s most famous service rifle.
