Our Assessment: Company COO Garrett Wall says “We’re not a [gun] sales company. We’re an engineering company and we’re engineering an entire shooting system.”, a statement which perfectly sums up the Wyoming-based rifle maker. The Gunwerks LR-1000 is a top of the line long range shooting system. The term system is apt when describing Gunwerks products because while there are plenty of gunsmiths who can build you an accurate rifle, not many can lay claim to providing the level of ballistic synchronization Gunwerks does. Gunwerks flawlessly executes an unparalleled synergy between their rifle, custom scope, and precision rangefinder, all working perfectly as one. The NightForce optic has Gunwerks G7 reticle that is perfectly calibrated to a 168 Grain VLD load. The reticle found in the included NightForce scope is the creation of company CEO Aaron Davidson while he was in engineering school. Company COO Garrett Wall says “Ballistic turrets were nonexistent then, so he [Davidson] put together a formula to measure drop and then make an adjustment with the scope turret so you could just hold straight on instead of hold over. His teacher told him it was a horrible idea…”, “His passion started with scopes and from there parlayed into firearms.” As amazed as we are with the scope, reticle, and rangefinder (not included), the rifle itself is damn impressive.
Not just a combination of available long-range parts on the market, the guns made by Gunwerks are designed and built by them to ensure flawless function. The LR-100 has a fluted barrel with a removable muzzle brake, spiral fluted bolt, and carbon fiber stock. The spiral fluted stainless steel bolt has two ejectors to ensure the spent cases clear the port and more importantly the scope turrets. The carbon fiber stocks are designed by Gunwerks, molded by McMillan and then CNC-finished and bedded by Gunwerks. The stocks too, have subtle design features to enhance the shooter’s experience. “It has a little wider forend than some traditional factory rifle stocks,” says Wall. “If you look at the profile you’ll see it’s designed with a negative slope to pull away from your cheek [under recoil] instead of into your cheek.”
There is no doubt an experienced and knowledgeable shooter can just as easily have an accurate rifle built, get all of the additional optical components together and be effective at fairly long distances. But the key to that is someone who is “experienced and knowledgeable,” and who also has a good amount of spare time, money, and ammo to shoot and collect all of their ballistic data. “We’re selling a broken-in, calibrated system, and we’re doing a lot of that work for you,” says Wall. “There’s sure a lot to learn about wind, etc., but [aside from that] it’s literally just turn the dial to the appropriate yardage and pull the trigger.” As Gunwerks’ production manager, Mike Davidson, puts it, “When we ship you a gun, we know that it’s going to shoot at 1,000 yards right out of the box. The reason we know that is that we’ve already shot it at 1,000 yards before we put it in the box.”
This rifle is not for everybody, nor is it meant to be, but this rifle is without a doubt for discerning shooters, hunters, and sportsmen. The guys who know it’s better to pay for performance instead of having a cheap scope or amalgamation of off-the-shelf parts fail on your expensive trip and let the trophy game get away. Better to pay for a rifle that will serve you well for years to come than pay for a sob story of “the one that got away”. This is the ultimate long range hunting rifle from Gunwerks, so if you’ve been wanting a rifle system that’s as “turn key” as possible while retaining the highest performance, Gunwerks has you covered. They provide an exceptionally built package sure to withstand the toughest conditions and perform when you need it to! Please see our photos and good luck!
Some are hot, some are not, but thankfully most can be shot!
