Markings: The top of the receiver is marked with a Greek cross and “Y: 1903/14.” The left side of the receiver is marked “BREDA 1927,” indicating refurbishment in Italy. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number “Z7784.” The bolt handle is marked “G2757.” The stock has various markings, including a faint serial number and other inspection stamps.

Barrel Length: 29”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to a base on the barrel. The rear sight is a tangent leaf sight with a sliding elevator, marked for range adjustments.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle has a full-length walnut stock with a straight grip and a steel buttplate. The stock exhibits handling marks, dents, and scratches, particularly on the right side near the receiver and buttstock. The wood has been refinished.   There a crack on either side of the butt stock that has been repaired. The LOP measures 13 1/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is dark, the rifling is defined. There is moderate visible erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 6/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 65% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows operational wear, with areas of thinning and light patina. The receiver and barrel exhibit some handling marks and minor oxidation. The bolt handle shows some finish wear but remains functional. The screw heads are serviceable, with light tool marks. The markings are sharp and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Mannlicher–Schönauer Y:1903/14 was the standard issue rifle for the Greek military, known for its smooth bolt-action operation and robust rotary magazine. This example, manufactured in 1927 and later refurbished by Breda, reflects Greece’s continued use of these rifles through multiple conflicts, including the Balkan Wars and World War II.

Highly regarded for its exceptional craftsmanship, the Mannlicher–Schönauer action is one of the smoothest of its time.
