Year of Manufacture: 1961 / C&R Eligible

Caliber: .300 Weatherby Magnum

Action Type: Bolt Action, Internal Magazine, Hinged Floorplate.

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “USE ONLY / .300 WBY MAG. / (WEATHERBY MAG.)”. The left side of the receiver is marked “MARK V / PATENTS PENDING / Weatherby”. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number.

Barrel Length: 26″

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Weatherby 2 3/4-10x Variable scope. The scope shows light wear, with a few light scratches, dings, and some light finish wear. Overall, the scope rates in Good to Very Good condition. The scope is mounted to the receiver by a one-piece Redfield base, and sits in 1″ rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece, skip-line checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, vented brown rubber Weatherby buttpad, a tipped forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows signs of a refinish, with uneven patches of staining, and some light sanding marks. There are light scratches, dings, and compressions throughout.  The checkering is mostly well defined. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original (Metal finish is Original)

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear, with a few minor hairline scratches and minor imperfections throughout the barrel and receiver. The bolt shows light operational marks. There is minor thinning of the finish on the floorplate and trigger guard, and light thinning on the bolt knob. The bluing is intact, otherwise. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V Deluxe is one of the signature sporting rifles associated with Roy Weatherby’s high-velocity magnum cartridges and distinctive California styling. This 1961 example was produced during the desirable West German period, when J.P. Sauer & Sohn manufactured the Mark V for Weatherby. Chambered in .300 Weatherby Magnum with a 26″ barrel, nine-lug Mark V action, hinged floorplate, and high-comb Deluxe walnut stock, it represents the classic configuration that helped establish Weatherby’s reputation for powerful, refined sporting rifles during the postwar era.

This rifle is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 90% of its original blue finish with scattered light scratches and imperfections, operational wear on the bolt, and minor thinning on the floorplate, trigger guard, and bolt knob. The skip-line checkered walnut stock has been refinished and rates in Good condition, showing uneven staining, light sanding marks, scattered handling wear, and mostly well-defined checkering, but no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10, while the action and safety function correctly. The included Weatherby 2 3/4-10x variable scope shows light wear and rates in Good to Very Good condition. As a 1961 West German-produced Mark V Deluxe in .300 Weatherby Magnum, this remains a desirable example from an important period in Weatherby history.
