Our Assessment: The West German Sig Sauer P226 earned its reputation in the 1980s during the U.S. military’s XM9 trials, where it stood alongside the Beretta 92 as a serious contender for service adoption. Built on a robust locked-breech system and renowned for its smooth double action trigger and durable alloy frame, the P226 quickly became a favored sidearm among military, law enforcement, and discerning civilian shooters worldwide. Chambered in 9mm Luger, a cartridge introduced in 1902 that has become the global standard for service pistols, the P226 offers controllable recoil, strong terminal performance, and widespread availability in a proven full-size platform.
This 1986 JG date-coded example remains in Very Good condition, retaining approximately 98 percent of its original finish with only light handling and storage wear noted on the slide and minor dings on the trigger. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 10 out of 10. The checkered grip panels show only minor handling marks, and the pistol includes two 15 round factory magazines along with its original serial number matching box and paperwork. Mechanically sound and representative of classic W. German production, this P226-X stands as a desirable early-era example of one of Sig Sauer’s most iconic service pistols.
