Our Assessment: The German Mauser Karabiner 98 Kurz, often abbreviated as K98k, was the standard-issue bolt-action rifle of the German military during World War II. Produced by Mauser Werke, the K98k was based on the earlier Gewehr 98 rifle but featured several modifications for mass production and modernization. During World War II, the K98k served as the primary infantry weapon for the German Army (Wehrmacht) and other branches of the German military. It was used extensively on all fronts, from the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union to the Western Front against the Allied forces. The K98k’s ruggedness, reliability, and accuracy made it highly regarded by soldiers and respected by adversaries. Its distinctive profile and distinctive features, such as the turned-down bolt handle and the stamped metal parts, have made it an iconic symbol of the German military during World War II. -R.E.
