Our Assessment: The Mauser S/42 code P.08 Luger represents prewar production of one of Germany’s most iconic service pistols. Manufactured in 1936 at the Mauser Oberndorf factory, these pistols were produced during the early rearmament period and are identified by the S/42 manufacturer code used prior to the later “byf” designation. The P.08 utilizes Georg Luger’s distinctive toggle lock system, offering precise machining and smooth operation that made it a benchmark military sidearm. Chambered in 9mm Luger, the cartridge introduced in 1902, the platform became one of the most widely adopted handgun calibers in the world.
This example retains about 98 percent of its refinished blue finish with handling wear, scattered scratches, and areas of underlying corrosion pitting visible beneath the refinish along with thinning of the strawed components. The replacement wood grip panels show moderate handling wear with minor chipped checkering but remain intact, rating in Very Good condition overall. The bore appears gray with defined rifling along with light erosion and faint pitting, rating 6 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly and the pistol includes one 8 round magazine with an aluminum floorplate. Overall, this pistol presents as a refinished example of a prewar Mauser S/42 Luger from 1936 production.
