Our Assessment: The Gewehr 98, often abbreviated as G98, is a historic bolt-action rifle that was the standard service rifle of the German Empire and later the Weimar Republic and Germany during the early 20th century. It was introduced in 1898 and remained in service until the mid-20th century.
The Gewehr 98 was designed by Paul Mauser and his brother Wilhelm Mauser. It was a culmination of their earlier rifle designs and incorporated several innovative features. The rifle utilized a strong and reliable bolt-action system with a rotating bolt head and a two-lug bolt design, ensuring smooth cycling and consistent performance.
During World War I, the Gewehr 98 played a significant role as the primary rifle of the German forces. Its reliability, accuracy, and robust construction made it well-suited for the demands of trench warfare. However, its length and weight posed challenges in close-quarter combat situations.
The Gewehr 98 underwent several modifications and variations throughout its service life, including different barrel lengths, stock designs, and sights. It served as the basis for many other Mauser rifles, including the famous Karabiner 98k used by German forces in World War II.
This sporterized G98 chambered in 22-250 is a now beautiful hunting rifle paired with an impressive Long Range Nikko Sterling 4-16×50 Riflescope for the best of Marksmen. Please see photos and good luck!
