Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted V post atop a small base. The rear sight is a flip up sight ladder. In the down position it uses a stationary V notched blade and a V notched blade that rotates up to engage farther distances. When flipped up the sight ladder has 3 other V notches to use. The top portion of the ladder slides up to reveal distance markings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece smooth wood with a straight grip, two barrel bands, nose cap with bayonet lug, cutout for the included cleaning rod, two sling loops and a metal buttplate. The wood shows scattered scratches and compression marks. Some of these have damaged or removed portions of the surface wood. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate has gone to a thick, dark patina with solid erosion. The stock rates in Very Good-plus overall condition as Antique.

Type of Finish: Bright

Finish Originality: Original, numbered parts match

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling. There is some scattered minor erosion in the bore, mostly toward the muzzle-end. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7 or 8 out of 10.

Overall Condition: The metal has some scattered minor surface erosion and oxidation. There is some scattered dried grease. There are some nicks, scuffs and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are generally clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Model 1871 Mauser is the design of Paul & Wilhelm Mauser that placed the Mauser name firmly in firearms history. It was adopted by Germany in 1871. Unfortunately the Mauser brothers were not yet in a position to produce the rifle themselves. Model 1871 Mausers were manufactured by Spandau & Danzig in Germany, by Steyr in Austria and some were even made in England. This one was made back in 1874 at the Danzig Arsenal. Model 1871 rifles are scarce. The later Model 71/84 Mausers are more common. This Model 1871 Mauser has matching numbers on the metal parts and will make a great addition to an early military cartridge rifle collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
