Our Assessment: The George T. Abbey Hammer 12-gauge Side-by-Side (SxS) shotgun is a classic example of 19th-century American craftsmanship, showcasing the elegant yet functional design of early double-barrel shotguns. Manufactured by George T. Abbey, a gunmaker known for producing well-crafted firearms during the late 1800s, this shotgun reflects the aesthetic and practical standards of its time. Shotguns like these were widely used by hunters, farmers, and sportsmen for their reliability, simplicity, and durability. The defining feature of the George T. Abbey shotgun is its external hammer mechanism. Unlike more modern hammerless designs, this shotgun features prominent external hammers that must be manually cocked before firing. While this design may seem antiquated compared to internal hammer systems, it was standard in the late 19th century and provides the shooter with visual and tactile confirmation that the gun is ready to fire. The hammer-fired mechanism is simple, reliable, and historically significant, making these shotguns a favorite among vintage firearm enthusiasts. In terms of craftsmanship, the George T. Abbey shotgun often features quality materials, including finely checkered walnut stocks and well-fitted steel components. The English style walnut stock not only provides a solid and comfortable grip but also adds to the aesthetic appeal of the shotgun with its rich grain and smooth finish.
