Our Assessment: This Garrett Arms Co. 1863 Sharps Cavalry Carbine Cartridge Conversion is a modern reproduction of the Sharps cavalry carbine pattern, manufactured in 1979 and chambered in .45-70 Government. Its 22″ barrel, lever-operated falling-block action, folding V-notch ladder rear sight, silver blade front sight, banded forend, straight-wrist walnut stock, and smooth steel buttplate give it strong Civil War-era Sharps styling, while the .45-70 cartridge chambering makes it more practical for conventional shooting than a paper-cartridge percussion example. As a Garrett Arms reproduction, its appeal is primarily as a black powder cartridge or vintage-style shooter, reenactment/display piece, or Sharps-pattern collector arm rather than as an original antique Sharps carbine.

Condition is Very Good overall. The rifle retains about 90% of its original blued and case-colored metal finish, with scattered scratches, handling and operational wear, and some lacquer noted on the barrel. The screw heads are sharp, and the markings are clear, both of which support the rifle’s overall presentation. The stock has been refinished, so its originality is somewhat reduced, but it remains attractive and structurally sound, showing only light handling wear and a few small spots of chipped finish along the edges, with no cracks. As refinished, the stock properly rates Very Good.

Mechanically, the action and trigger are reported to function correctly, though the rifle has not been test-fired. The bore is a major strength, rated 9.5/10, with bright metal, sharp rifling, no erosion, and only very minor fouling. Overall, this is a Very Good condition Garrett Arms 1863 Sharps Cavalry Carbine cartridge-conversion reproduction with excellent bore condition, sound mechanics, sharp screws, clear markings, and strong remaining finish. Its value is moderated mainly by the refinished stock, scattered scratches, barrel lacquer, and lack of box or accessories, but it remains an appealing .45-70 Sharps-pattern carbine for a shooter, black powder cartridge enthusiast, or collector of high-quality historical reproductions.
