Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass blade pinned into a base soldered to the barrel. The rear sight is a folding V notch ladder sight screwed to the barrel. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is two piece smooth walnut, banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, patchbox, and smooth steel buttplate. The LOP is 14″ from trigger to buttplate. There are light scratches and compression dents throughout. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blued, Case Colored. 

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is some light lead fouling. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original finish. There are scratches and light corrosion freckles scattered throughout. There is handling and operational wear. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action and trigger function correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Garrett Arms Co. 1859 Sharps Cavalry Carbine is a modern reproduction of the classic percussion Sharps cavalry carbine, manufactured in 1984 and chambered in .54 caliber. Its 22″ barrel, lever-operated falling-block action, paper-cartridge percussion system, folding ladder rear sight, brass blade front sight, patchbox, banded forend, and smooth steel buttplate give it strong Civil War cavalry-carbine styling. As a Garrett Arms example, its appeal is primarily as a black powder shooter, reenactment piece, or historical-pattern display arm rather than as an original 19th-century Sharps collectible.

Condition is a strong point. The carbine retains about 90% of its original blued and case-colored finish, with scattered scratches, light corrosion freckles, and normal handling and operational wear. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable, and the markings remain clear. The walnut stock is especially nice, rating Excellent, with only light scratches and compression dents and no chips or cracks. The bore is also excellent, rated 9/10, with bright surfaces, sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light lead fouling.

Mechanically, the action and trigger are reported to function correctly, though the carbine has not been test-fired. A full cleaning would be appropriate before use, especially given the light lead fouling and the black powder percussion system. Overall, this is a Very Good condition Garrett Arms 1859 Sharps Cavalry Carbine reproduction with strong bore condition, sound mechanics, attractive wood, and desirable period-style features. Its value is moderated mainly by light corrosion freckles, handling wear, lightly tooled screws, and the absence of box or accessories, but it remains an appealing choice for a black powder enthusiast, reenactor, or collector of reproduction Civil War arms.
