Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are standard A1 pattern with two-piece triangular handguard with heat shields, checkered pistol grip, stock with storage compartment in the buttplate. The stocks have some scattered scuffing and light scratches. The two halves of the handguard don’t meet exactly at the vents, but are otherwise well fit to each other. There are thin cracks in the buttplate at the top corners of the storage compartment. The LOP measures 13″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Hard Anodize, Phosphate

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The chrome-lined bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, there is a little stubborn fouling in the throat. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8+/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The finish is generally strong throughout. There are evenly scattered light nicks, scuffs and small scratches. The action shows light operational wear. The pin heads are unmarred. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a copy of a 1989 dated transfer/tax stamp form stored in the buttstock.

Our Assessment: Developed by Eugene Stoner, the M16 was a revolutionary design which fused modern manufacturing, aerospace materials, and a small-caliber, high-velocity (SCHV) cartridge. The result was a rifle that dominates the semi-automatic rifle market to this very day and whose design has been in use by the United States military in various forms for more than 60 years.

Prior to 1986, it was possible for regular citizens to purchase fully-automatic M16 rifles and register them under the scheme created by the National Firearms Act. Some rifles were also sold out of service by military or public agencies. Since then, pre-1986 machineguns have been transferable so long as they were registered under the NFA. This appears to be one of the latter, badged as property of Natrona County in Wyoming and transferred as early as 1989. Despite being full-auto, it appears to have seen limited and responsible use, retaining a great bore and light operational wear. Its pencil-profile barrel appears to have the earlier slow twist rate of 1:12″, with proper A1 furniture and flash suppressor, making for a classic rifle in a highly desirable configuration.

This is a very interesting example of a transferable factory Colt M16. It is a registered machinegun, transferable on a Form 3 or Form 4 after BATF approval. AR15 owners know how much fun they are to shoot, but there’s nothing like full-auto to make it even better. Please see our photos and good luck!
