Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a folding brass knuckle assembly, suitable as a pistol grip when folded away from the frame. The grip has operational and handling wear, some scattered discoloration, and a few nicks and scratches. Most notable is wear from the knife retainer tab. Note, the grip retainer pin does not positively retain the grip in the folded position (for use as knuckles), but the retainer when open (for use as revolver) is positive. Overall, the grip is in Very Good condition as Antique.
Type of Finish: Brass and In The White
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The chambers don’t appear to have been rifled, showing some light erosion and stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the chambers rate about 7 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 50% of its finish. The brass shows some scattered light wear and discoloration. The steel parts have gone to a mottled light patina with some areas still in the white. There are some scattered nicks and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The engraving is clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Very Good condition as Antique.
Mechanics: The retaining pin for the grip does not positively hold it in the closed position. The cylinder pin retainer is a little loose and will fall out of the way easily. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: Of all the defensive implements of the late 19th Century, the “Apache” knuckleduster is one of the more visually and mechanically distinctive. Originally designed by Frenchman Louis Dolne, these intriguing weapons incorporate brass knuckles, a knife, and a pinfire revolver, with components folding into the appropriate form-factory for the use of each. The story goes that they received the nickname “Apache” due to an association with French street-thugs who were nicknamed after the American Indian tribe due to their reputation for being extraordinarily violent. This example is a 5mm pinfire that was most likely made in Europe. It’s in fairly good shape given its age and would make a great display piece in any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
