Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are refinished pitting marks throughout. There are light handling marks and thinning at the leading edge. There are rust spots on the rear sling bar. The screw heads show light use. The markings are mostly clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine Plus condition as refinished.

Our Assessment: The FN Mexican Mauser Model 1924 Carbine in 7x57mm is a significant firearm with historical roots in both Mexican military service and European firearms manufacturing. This carbine was produced by Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Belgium, one of the premier arms manufacturers of the early 20th century, under contract for the Mexican government. It is a variant of the classic Mauser design, which had become widely regarded for its reliability, accuracy, and durable bolt-action system. Chambered in 7x57mm Mauser, a cartridge known for its effectiveness in both military and hunting applications, the Model 1924 Carbine offered a well-balanced combination of power and manageable recoil. The 7x57mm cartridge, sometimes called the 7mm Mauser, was widely respected for its flat trajectory and long-range accuracy, characteristics that made it a favorite of both military forces and civilian marksmen. The carbine-length rifle was designed to be more compact and maneuverable than full-length rifles, making it better suited for cavalry, infantry, and mounted troops who required a lighter and shorter firearm for mobility. The Model 1924 featured a straight bolt handle typical of many Mauser carbines, a shorter barrel of 16 inches, and a five-round internal magazine fed by stripper clips, allowing for efficient reloading in combat situations.
Overall, the FN Model 1924 is a fine example of the Mauser legacy and represents a key piece in the evolution of military bolt-action rifles in Mexico and beyond. Its chambering in 7x57mm Mauser continues to make it a desirable firearm for both collectors and those interested in shooting vintage military rifles. -R.E.
