Our Assessment: The Browning BAR rifle was produced starting in 1967. This is an example from 1983 and it has a 22” barrel which has a bright bore and sharp rifling. The rifle looks to have seen little use in the field, retaining about 97% of its metal finish and strong mechanics. This semi-automatic rifle is chambered for 243 Winchester. The .243 Winchester is a popular sporting rifle cartridge. Developed as a versatile short action cartridge to hunt both medium game and small game alike, it “took whitetail hunting by storm” when introduced in 1955, and remains one of the most popular whitetail deer cartridges. It is also commonly used for harvesting blacktail deer, pronghorns and mule deer with heavier rounds, and is equally suited to varmint hunting with lighter rounds.
