Our Assessment: Flaig’s was a well-known gun shop and custom gunsmithing business located in Millvale, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Established by Ace Flaig, the shop gained prominence primarily during the mid-20th century for its high-quality custom rifles and gunsmithing services. Flaig’s was particularly noted for its expertise in creating precision barrels and for modifying Mauser rifles, which were popular among hunters and shooting enthusiasts.
The shop specialized in rebarreling and accurizing rifles, especially utilizing the Mauser 98 action, which is renowned for its durability and reliability. This made Flaig’s a go-to destination for hunters seeking custom rifles capable of exceptional performance in various hunting conditions. Flaig’s rifles, like the Flaig Ace 98 Mauser Sporter, were customized to client specifications with options for different calibers, stocks, and finishes, allowing for a highly personalized shooting experience.
Flaig’s also had a reputation for offering high-quality German and Austrian firearms and was one of the early importers and sellers of such guns in the United States. Additionally, the shop provided a range of gunsmithing services and was known for its attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Ace Flaig’s contribution to the field of custom gunsmithing and his commitment to quality helped establish Flaig’s as a respected name in the firearms community. While the shop is no longer in operation, and the inventory auctioned off by Flaig’s daughter, its legacy continues among collectors and enthusiasts who cherish the precision and artistry of Flaig-crafted firearms. This rifle still retains much of its glory. The action is smooth, the trigger is crisp, the bore is strong, and the pedigree of this rifle is enough to grab the collectors or make this a new favorite hunting rifle.
