Our Assessment: The Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant rifle represents the culmination of Finland’s refinement of the Mosin rifle design during the Second World War. After gaining independence from Russia, Finland inherited large numbers of Mosin rifles and gradually improved them to better meet Finnish military requirements. The M39 incorporated a heavier barrel, improved sights, and a redesigned stock that enhanced accuracy and durability in harsh conditions. Produced by firms such as Sako, these rifles were chambered in 7.62x54R, the long serving Russian cartridge adopted in 1891 that continued to see widespread military use well into the twentieth century.
This example was produced by Sako in 1944 and bears the Finnish “SA” property mark on the barrel shank along with the Sako maker’s mark. The rifle retains about 96 percent of its metal finish with light operational wear, scattered scratches, and areas of thinning along the magazine and buttplate. The two piece hardwood stock with the characteristic Finnish finger jointed forend shows handling wear including scratches, compression marks, a repaired toe crack, and dowel repairs at the wrist and forend, though it remains structurally sound overall. The bore appears mostly bright with defined rifling along with light erosion and faint pitting in the grooves, rating 6 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The rifle has been fitted with a VP.OBR scope mounted to the top of the receiver and the mount holes should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith prior to firing. The rifle includes an M1939 bayonet and leather sling. Please see our high definition photos and good luck on your bids! -N.P
