Markings: The barrel shank is marked with the Finnish “SA” property marking and the Sako gear marking with, “SK.Y. / 68085 / 1940”. The buttplate is marked “46P / 5131 / 97579”. The right side of the buttstock has a Sako cartouche and “40”. There are small proofs throughout.

Sights / Optics: The front sight base has integral ears to protect the blade and is attached to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch sight escalator in the down position. When flipped up it is a sight ladder that uses a sliding V-notch blade.
Stock Configuration & Condition: This rifle has a two piece wood stock with a nose cap & cleaning rod, barrel band, sling escutcheons w/ sling loop, barrel band, through bolt, straight wrist, straight comb, with a steel buttplate. The stock has the signature fingered together forend. The stock has scratches, compressions, and small nicks throughout. The LOP measures 13.25” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There is a crack on the rear right side of the upper forend. There is a chip on the midlength right side of the upper forend. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9 out of 10. The bore is not counterbored.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and flight thinning throughout. There is faint corrosion pitting on the magazine. There is light thinning on the buttplate. The screw heads range from sharp to tooled with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. All other functions work as intended. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Finnish Sako M28/30 is one of the most respected Finnish Mosin-Nagant variants, developed from the earlier Civil Guard M28 with improved sights and accuracy-oriented refinements. The M28/30 was produced for the Finnish Civil Guard by SAKO and is commonly identified by the SAKO gear marking and “SK.Y” Civil Guard marking, both noted on this rifle. This 1940-dated example is chambered in 7.62x54R and is configured with a 27” barrel, protected front sight, M28/30 rear sight assembly, Finnish “SA” property marking, Sako cartouche, finger-jointed Finnish stock, and canvas sling.
This M28/30 is in Good condition overall, with strong metal and bore condition but visible stock wear and mismatched buttplate markings. The rifle retains about 96% of its blued finish with handling and storage wear, scratches, light thinning, faint pitting on the magazine, and buttplate thinning. The stock rates in Good condition, showing scratches, compression marks, small nicks, a crack on the rear right side of the upper forend, and a chip on the mid-length right side of the upper forend. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, fouling in the grooves, and is not counterbored, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, and the markings are clear. This rifle should appeal to Finnish Mosin collectors, Sako collectors, Civil Guard rifle enthusiasts, and C&R buyers looking for a 1940 M28/30 with strong bore condition and classic Finnish service-rifle features.
