Our Assessment: The Erfurt Gewehr 91 (Gew 91) is a lesser-known variant of the German Gewehr 88 “Commission Rifle,” produced at the Erfurt Arsenal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Gew 91 was a shortened carbine version of the Gewehr 88, designed for specialized units and cavalry forces. Unlike the later Karabiner 98 series, the Gew 91 retained the Mannlicher-style en bloc clip feeding system, which was eventually phased out in favor of stripper clip-fed Mausers.

This example, bearing serial number 9294 C, shows significant wear from service and age. The metal has developed a brown patina, and the stock has scuffs and handling marks indicative of a long service life. Despite its cosmetic wear, the rifle retains matching period components, a functional bolt, and clear markings.

For collectors of Imperial German firearms, early bolt-action rifles, or unique Mauser predecessors, this Erfurt Gew 91 presents an interesting and historical addition. Whether as a display piece, restoration project, or research specimen, this rifle showcases the transitional period of German military small arms design leading into the 20th century. So bid high and bid firm. Please take a look at the condition in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
