Our Assessment: The Colt 1860 Army is one of the most famous percussion revolvers of the nineteenth century and was the primary sidearm issued to Union forces during the American Civil War. Introduced in 1860, the revolver combined the power of the .44 caliber chambering with a streamlined frame that improved balance and handling compared to earlier Colt designs. Its widespread military use and association with the Civil War era have made the model one of the most recognizable and historically significant black powder revolvers ever produced.

This example is a modern commemorative presentation revolver produced by America Remembers and A&A Engraving, featuring elaborate custom engraving and decorative embellishments inspired by the history of the Civil War. The revolver is adorned with extensive gold and silver scrollwork along with portraits of Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson engraved on the cylinder. Additional embellishments include a silver eagle, a C.S.A. shield, and a banner reading “God Bless Dixie,” while the ring around the cylinder lists notable battles of the Civil War. These commemorative revolvers were produced as display pieces honoring Civil War history and were typically issued in limited numbers with fitted presentation cases.

This revolver appears unfired since factory testing and retains about 99 percent of its original finish with sharp engraving and vivid gold and silver accents. The bore is bright with strong rifling and the revolver is housed in a glass topped walnut presentation case with velvet lining and identification plaque. With its elaborate decorative treatment, Civil War themed engraving, and presentation display case, this revolver represents an eye-catching commemorative interpretation of one of Colt’s most historically important percussion revolvers.
