Our Assessment: The Egyptian Maadi RPM is a fascinating AK-47 variant that emerged out of a collaboration between Egypt and the Soviet Union. Produced by the Maadi Company for Engineering Industries in Cairo, this rifle is a product of Cold War geopolitics, manufactured with the assistance of Soviet technicians who helped set up the production facilities. As a result, the Maadi RPM bears a striking resemblance to the Russian AKM but incorporates unique elements that make it distinct.
Chambered in the ubiquitous 7.62x39mm cartridge, the Maadi RPM features a stamped receiver, in line with its AKM heritage. What distinguishes the Maadi RPM from other AK variants is its higher level of craftsmanship compared to some Eastern Bloc productions, evident in its fit and finish. It also follows the traditional Soviet pattern of design, opting for a standard fixed wooden stock and wooden handguards, rather than synthetic materials. This gives the Maadi RPM a classic look that has become increasingly hard to find in modern, polymer-laden firearms.
To sum it up, the Maadi RPM is more than just an AK-47 variant; it’s a piece of Cold War history with a distinctive Egyptian flair. For collectors interested in Cold War-era firearms or those who have a soft spot for AK variants, the Maadi RPM is an interesting and somewhat rare find. Its high-quality construction, traditional aesthetic, and historical significance make it an intriguing option for any aficionado of Kalashnikov designs. -L.S.
