Our Assessment: The Egyptian Rasheed was one of the final developments of the Swedish Ljungman-derived rifle family and represents an unusually compact adaptation of the Egyptian Hakim system. Produced at Factory 54 in Maadi during the late 1960s, the Rasheed scaled the direct-impingement, tilting-bolt operating system down to the Soviet 7.62x39mm cartridge and incorporated a detachable 10-round magazine, stripper-clip loading capability, and folding bayonet. Production was extremely limited, with only about 7,300 to 8,000 rifles manufactured before Egypt transitioned toward AK-pattern service rifles. This 1968 example comes from the final production period and retains the characteristic 20.5″ barrel, folding bayonet, Arabic-marked sights, and military stock configuration. This rifle remains in Very Good Plus condition, retaining approximately 96% of its original matte blued finish. The exterior shows light thinning, scratches, and small nicks, while the action exhibits light operational wear. The screw heads remain sharp and the markings are clear. The two-piece wood stock shows scratches, pressure dents, and several small chips but remains free of cracks and rates in Very Good Plus condition. The bore is bright with pronounced rifling and shows light erosion, rating 7.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The folding bayonet remains in Excellent condition. Mechanically, the action functions correctly.

For collectors of Cold War military rifles, the Rasheed is particularly desirable because of its limited production, unusual Swedish-Egyptian mechanical lineage, and transitional position between the Hakim and Egypt’s later AK-pattern rifles. Its compact 7.62x39mm chambering, direct-impingement system, tilting bolt, folding bayonet, 10-round magazine, and Arabic military markings give it a configuration unlike virtually any other service rifle of the period. With its strong remaining finish, bright bore, intact military furniture, original magazine, and 1968 production date, this is an especially attractive example of one of Egypt’s scarcest military self-loading rifles. -R.E.
