Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is some light erosion and stubborn fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.

Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light thinning of the finish on the barrel and receiver. There are some light scratches present. The markings are clear. The screwheads are sharp. This rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a leather sling.

Our Assessment: The U.S. Model of 1917 was America’s answer to the shortage of M1903 rifles during World War I. Based on the British P14 Enfield, this robust rifle was chambered in .30-06 Springfield and used extensively by American forces. Manufactured by three contractors—Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone—this particular example was made by Eddystone, the most prolific producer.

The M1917 saw continued use through World War II, particularly with second-line troops and allied forces. Known for its accuracy and rugged build, it remains a sought-after military surplus rifle.

This example, with its clear markings and well-preserved bore, is an excellent choice for collectors and shooters alike. Whether you are a military historian, an M1917 enthusiast, or simply looking for a classic bolt-action rifle, this one is worth adding to your collection.
