Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood has been sanded and re-finished. The upper rear handguard shows a crack between the grooved band and the receiver. The stock shows a large chip missing from just in front of the bottom metal. The rest of the wood shows scattered light lines, compressions and some punch marks. The butt plate has lost some of its finish, shows rub wear around the edges and surface rust forming in the checkering. The door spring is strong. There is a notable compression in front of the band on the upper rear handguard. Overall the stock set is in about Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is well defined, there is visible erosion/pitting and verdigris/fouling in the bore mainly in the grooves. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2.5+ and a throat erosion of 3+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6.5/10.
Overall Condition: the rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The finish on the receiver and trigger group have turned green from age. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show some rub wear. The cylinder and gas plug show the majority of the finish loss. The barrel and op-rod show some verdigris. The markings are clear with the noted exception. The screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle includes a green canvas sling.
Our Assessment: This M1 Garand was manufactured by Springfield Armory in March 1942 and retains a correct March 1942 dated Springfield barrel, placing the rifle firmly in early World War II production. Rifles from this period were produced as the United States was rapidly expanding its military forces following entry into the war, and many Garands from this timeframe were supplied to Allied nations as part of wartime aid and cooperative defense efforts.
The barrel on this example bears over-stamped markings from the Birmingham Proof House, indicating that the rifle passed through British proof testing during its service life. These markings suggest the rifle likely served in the United Kingdom, most commonly for training or home island defense roles during and after the war. The rifle appears to have been proofed in 1955, a period when many U.S. supplied firearms in Britain were reproofed as they continued to be stored, maintained, or prepared for potential reserve use.
