Our Assessment: The Model 1841, known as the “Mississippi Rifle,” is one of the most iconic percussion rifles of the mid-19th century. This rifle, produced by E. Whitney and dated 1848, is a wonderful example of the craftsmanship and utility that made these firearms famous. The “Mississippi Rifle” earned its name due to its use by Jefferson Davis’s Mississippi Regiment during the Mexican-American War.
This example features the original .54 caliber configuration, strong rifling, and beautiful brass furniture, including a patch box, trigger guard, and barrel bands, all with an attractive mustard patina. The glossy stock, in excellent condition, stands out as a highlight of this rifle, offering a striking contrast to the aged patina of the metal components.
The thick brown patina on the barrel and subtle traces of blueing on the lock and hammer further emphasize its authentic and well-preserved character. The bore, rated 8/10, ensures this rifle retains its functionality for black powder shooting or reenactments.
